Well, it\u2019s pretty easy: <\/span><b>by involving them in decision-making and, thereby, making them take over responsibility. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sounds reasonable, right? However, (as always) the devil is in the details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve already talked about why our world is characterized by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaders21.com\/en\/blog\/is-bani-the-new-vuca-agile-work-in-the-21st-century\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, why <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaders21.com\/en\/blog\/the-agile-hype-what-do-agile-working-and-leadership-actually-mean\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">agility is so much more than just a fad<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and how modern goal-setting and steering systems like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaders21.com\/en\/blog\/okrs-agile-goal-setting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OKRs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can contribute to seeing light at the end of the tunnel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What happens, though, if the problem is deeply entrenched in an organization, if basic decisions about the further direction of a company can\u2019t be made because there is no common ground? <\/span><b>Oftentimes, the reason for such a standoff is the content-related complexity of the problem and the resulting fact that many people and competencies would have to collaborate and be connected to find a solution. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In practice, the endeavor of bringing together the people whose knowledge and contributions are necessary to solve the problem often fails. Because \u201cit\u2019s too complicated,\u201d \u201cthere\u2019s no time,\u201d or \u201cnothing would come of it anyway.\u201d These are the most popular excuses for not having to tackle the challenge of solving a complex problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The solution to complex problems<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><b>That\u2019s where the so-called <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Management_cybernetics\"><b>Management Cybernetics<\/b><\/a><b>, an exciting economic approach, come into play.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It sees organizations as complex mechanisms where the single parts (that is, employees, departments, etc.) strongly depend on each other. The Austrian saying <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDurchs Reden kommen d\u2019Leut zam\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explains the essence of this model in one sentence\u2014and could be translated as \u201cTalking brings people closer together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We at Leaders21 strongly believe in this cybernetic approach and support companies in creating the space necessary to bring together a large number of members of an organization to exchange views, experiences and ideas, thereby laying the groundwork for finding solutions to complex problems\u2014together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to manage complexity in real life<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So far, so clear. But what would this look like in real life? At Leaders21, we call the implementation of this approach a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaders21.com\/en\/success-stories\/rbi_marketing_brought-its-strategy-to-life-at-a-online-summit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d And here\u2019s how it works:<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Develop a common understanding of the task at hand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and choose and onboard all participants<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Create the right setting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To allow for focused work, all participants should be able to leave their daily work behind for 1 to 2 days and get the chance to tackle the challenges at hand in a neutral environment (e.g., in a hotel somewhere in the countryside).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the way, even if a physical location facilitates the exchange, a Summit can also be held digitally.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Phrase a guiding question:\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding the common goal, it is vital to phrase the Summit goal in a clear, unambiguous way.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Define focus topics together:\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group decides together which focus areas will be tackled in the course of the Summit.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Understand the status quo <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and design a<\/span><b> desired target state<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Agree on measures<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> needed to reach the goal and <\/span><b>assign responsibilities<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clear benefits of this approach for managing complexity in organizations are that <\/span><b>the entire know-how and competence of the company can be harnessed <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the one hand and that <\/span><b>the shared responsibility leads to a stronger identification with the agreed-upon solutions and measures on behalf of the team members <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the other hand.
