So, how can companies face this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.leaders21.com\/en\/blog\/is-bani-the-new-vuca-agile-work-in-the-21st-century\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uncertainty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without sliding into the vortex of change and ending up in chaos? The answer is: OKRs!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>What exactly are OKRs?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OKRs are <\/span><b><i>the<\/i><\/b><b> agile management method par excellence. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acronym stands for \u201cObjectives and Key Results,\u201d and the method\u2019s biggest advantage is that it offers companies a framework for making decisions in a <\/span><b>logical, pragmatic and fact-based <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">manner while enabling them to <\/span><b>act on short notice as well as flexibly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The basic idea here is that in today\u2019s complex, dynamic world those companies which are able to focus on their pivotal, value-creating tasks will be the most successful. OKR mastermind <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andrew_Grove\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Andy Grove<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aptly put it into words: <\/span><b>\u201cIf you focus on everything, you focus on nothing.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than contradicting a company\u2019s long-term vision and strategy, OKRs perfectly complement them. Why? Because their industries are especially prone to frequent change and characterized by disruptions, which is why the ability to act fast is a critical success factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether working with OKRs makes sense or not for a specific organization isn\u2019t determined by its line of business, size, or industry, but only by the company\u2019s <\/span><b>mindset<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The success of this method depends solely on the fact that every single employee understands exactly which role they play within the organization and their ability to interpret this role correspondingly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Framework conditions\u2014how to be successful with OKRs<\/b><b><\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Visionary thinking: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone is encouraged to think outside the box, get creative and proactively look for the best solutions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Empowerment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Employees are willing to deliver great performance, they are eager and able to focus on those things that will best contribute to the company\u2019s success.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transparency:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The entire organization is completely transparent with regards to its strategic goals and operative initiatives to enable the entire team to contribute to the company\u2019s success on a holistic level.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Communication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The organization puts emphasis on and fosters open communication in order to collectively and coordinately work towards its objectives.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>How do OKRs work in real life?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During our first year in business as Leaders21, we had the opportunity to accompany various organizations in introducing the OKR method. Despite their points of departure being very different from each other, the <\/span><b>critical success factors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were very similar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The<\/span><b> framework conditions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mentioned above, as well as <\/span><b>full support by an organization\u2019s leadership <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are mandatory to facilitate alignment and prioritization within the organization. On an operational level we strongly recommend to do things \u201cby the book.\u201d While the OKR framework requires and fosters communication and agility, it is very rigid when it comes to complying with meeting structures and formats, as well as documentation and tracking. This straitjacket often turns out to be the <\/span><b>biggest challenge<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for companies when they start working with OKRs. They are not used to having to keep up with the fast-paced <\/span><b>quarterly planning and measuring of results,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the need to bring their daily work into line with this kind of prioritization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our <\/span><b>Leaders21 approach<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> introduces companies step by step to the OKR methodology and makes sure the entire organization is on the same page right from the start.
