The usual response is eye-rolling or plain incomprehension\u2014and as soon as we\u2019re out of school, we just think \u201cYES, no more studying!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most youngsters, studying has a negative connotation, probably both due to the educational system itself as well as the fact that free time and other things seem so much more important at that time, or because of exam anxiety. As a matter of fact, many students don\u2019t really know why they need to study certain subjects. And telling them that they are \u201clearning for life\u201d is just too abstract at that age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>New challenges, lifelong learning<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the working world we soon realize that studying and learning will never stop. Yet, one thing usually changes: by then, most of us are glad that\u2019s how things work. In a work environment, continuous learning is a must due to the fast pace and volatility which characterize current times. Employees even expect training opportunities and to learn new things on the job. Our own skills give us job security and, therefore, need to be nurtured and further developed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accordingly, the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_Future_of_Jobs_2018.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Economic Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> states in its <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Future of Jobs<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201eA mindset of agile learning will also be needed on the part of workers as they shift from the routines and limits of today\u2019s jobs to new, previously unimagined futures.\u201c<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The term \u201cagile learning\u201d is of special interest here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Agile learning to counter constant change<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast-changing (agile) conditions in today\u2019s work world affect all workers and require constant training. According to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/a.sln.io\/peterwippermann\/XING-New-Work-Trendbook.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 survey by German business network XING<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (text is German only), 57% of the sample specified that <\/span><b>the training opportunities offered by their company did not sufficiently prepare them<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the challenges which emerge\u00a0 from the progress of digitalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the question is: Is it the leaders or the employees who are responsible for continuous learning and training?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a look at some principles from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agilemanifesto.org\/iso\/en\/manifesto.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Agile Manifesto<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the derived principles of agile learning (which Nele Graf, Denise Gram\u00df and Frank Edelkraut describe in their book \u201cAgile Learning\u201d), in order to answer this question:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><b>Extracts of the agile principles from the Agile Manifesto<\/b><\/td>\n<td><b>Derived principles of agile learning<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our highest priority is to satisfy the customer through early and continuous delivery of valuable software.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our highest priority is to provide an individual offer for successful learning through <\/span><b>\u201clearning on demand.\u201d<\/b><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We deliver products regularly, preferably in short cycles.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning is an <\/span><b>ongoing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> process that takes place in the form of <\/span><b>microlearning<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is reflected upon in an iterative manner.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All parts of an organization work together.<\/span><\/td>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning is designed and realized as a <\/span><b>multidisciplinary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> process.\u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Build teams around motivated individuals. First, learning objectives are defined in order to learn the right things while maintaining the freedom of self-organization. Social learning in peer groups supports and boosts the learning success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>In a nutshell, agile learning is based on\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-responsibility,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">self-organization,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">networks,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">digital learning (\u201clearning on demand\u201c) and<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">individualization.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, who is responsible for lifelong learning in companies then? The diplomatic answer is: leaders and employees share this responsibility. Whereas leaders need to create the framework for agile learning, employees contribute by acting proactively and bringing the principles to life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>Tips for an agile learning culture<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s a handful of practical tips for leaders who want to implement and foster an agile learning culture in their team or company:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allocate a training budget for every team member<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delegate the responsibility for their budget to your team members<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grant every team member training time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust your team members to learn the right things<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foster and help shape social exchange in the learning process<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Act as a learning and training coach<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be a role model and ambassador for this (agile) learning culture<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a leader, how do you foster lifelong learning in your team?
